Australia’s Optus to trial LTE, successor to 3G

Optus will be the first telco in the nation to trial a new mobile broadband technology that transmits data 20 times faster than current 3G systems.

The technology — which is known as LTE (long term evolution) and is being positioned as a successor to current 3G mobile networks — is capable of transmitting data at peak speeds of 340Mbps.

Optus parent company, SingTel, has announced it will run a trial of the wireless technology called Long Term Evolution (LTE) in Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore.

The trials are scheduled to run for six to nine months and will commence in the first half of 2010.
